Dick Cowan Dead
Cowan, Richard "Dick"Richard Cowan, well known in this vicinity, died in Tracy Hospital, Des Moines, on Wednesday evening, of typhoid fever. The news of his death brought sadness to the hearts of many old friends and comrades here who always admired Dick for his geniality and loyalty to friends, aw well as for his whole souled and generous nature.
He served faithfully as a soldier in one of the Illinois regiments, and immediately after the war came to this county where he lived until a few years ago when he moved to Des Moines.
His wife died in March 1897, and her body was brought to Newton for interment. Two children survive him, Mrs. Mary Holley of Des Moines and Prof. Tom Cowan of Anamosa, superintendent of the schools of Jones County, this state. He was a member of the M. E. Church, I.O.O.F. and G.A.R.
Brief funeral services were held at the First M. E. Church in Des Moines, at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, after which the remains were brought to Newton on No. 4, where they were met by Newton Lodge I.O.O.F., and taken to the Newton Cemetery for burial beside his companion, the services being conducted by the Odd Fellows.
