OBITUARY of Elizabeth Thomas Cope
Cope, Elizabeth (Thomas)

Elizabeth Thomas, the youngest daughter of Peter and Mary Thomas, was born in Harrison county, Ohio, 6th month 17th, 1834, and deceased at the home of her son, Pearson T. Cope near Searsboro, Poweshiek Co., Iowa, 3rd month, 12th, 1908.

She was married to Amos Cope 6th month, 26th, 1850, and to this union were born six children, two of whom survive her, Pearson T. near Searsboro, and Wm. A. of Marshalltown. Besides these and their wives, she leaves a brother, Peter Thomas, in the state of Washington, and a sister, Edyth Smith, in Ohio. She also leaves ten grand-children and five great-grand-children besides a host of neighbors and friends to mourn her loss.

In 1868 she came with her husband to Cedar county, Iowa, and settled near Springdale, and in 1878 came to the vicinity of Sugar Creek, in Jasper county, Iowa, where they resided till 10th month, 1904, when they moved to Lynnville.

On the 11th month, 2nd 1907, she was bereaved of her companion, and has since made her home wtih her son, Pearson. At the father's death, the sons looked forward to the many happy days they might enjoy with mother, but not so; she is gone.

She was a birthright member of Friends church, converted in early childhood and lived an humble, devoted, Christian life, loved by all who knew her.

Though not a public worker, she filled her mission in this life with kind words and loving hands, and many have been comforted along life's pathway by her tender sympathy and cheer, and by the many acts of kindness rendered by her.

Funeral services were held at Sugar Creek 3rd month 14th at 11 a.m. Text Rev. 14:13 by her paster, Clark Brown, assisted by Robert Lincoln and Leroy Hawks. Pall bearers the same that laid away her companion: Ezra Craven, David Meredith, John Boyl, Wilford Williams, David Stanley.".

Weep not that her toils are over,
Weep not that her race is run.
God grant that we may rest as calmly,
When our work, like hers, is done.
‘Til then we yield with gladness
Our mother to him to keep,
And rejoice in sweet assurance.
