OBITUARY of Amos A. Cope
Cope, Amos A.Amos A. Cope was born in Harrison county, Ohio, 12th month, 20th 1826, departed this life in Lynnville, Iowa 11th month 2nd 1907.
He was married to Elizabeth Thomas 6th month, 26th, 1850, who has shared his sorrows and joys for over half a century. To them were born six children, four of whom preceeded him. Two sons, William A. of Marshalltown, and Pearson T. near Searsboro, survive him, and with their aged mother mourn his loss this day. Two brothers also survive him, Benjamin and Oliver Cope of Cadiz, Ohio.
On 9th month 15th 1868 they moved from Ohio to Cedar county Iowa near Springdale, and in 1878 came to Jasper county and settled in the vicinity of Sugar Creek where they resided till about three years ago when they came to Lynnville.
Being a pioneer settler he suffered many hardships and underwent many privations of which those who are much younger known very little.
He was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, but in 1869 feeling the need of salvation he called upon Him who is mighty to save and found forgiveness. After his conversion he became an earnest worker for his Savior, and many are the kind words spoken in behalf of his Master, as he visited families or held meetings in his own or other neighborhoods. He took an active part in the business affairs of the church and was clerk of Lynn Grove Quarterly meeting for a number of years.
While living he did what so many neglect, he prepared for his decease. After arranging his earthly effects as he desired, he arranged for his funeral services, selecting his old neighbors as pall bearers, a special song to be sung, choosing his minister and the text which is a very fitting one and one it is to be hoped which we all may be able to adopt as our own as we enter the dark valley of the shadow of death. "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day; and not for me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."
Funeral services were held at Sugar Creek First Day at 2:30 p.m. by Ezra Pearson of LeGrand assisted by Clark Brown and Leroy Hawks, pastors at Lynnville and Sugar Creek. Mrs. Sarah Heacock sang as he requested, "Must Jesus bear the cross alone?" His chosen pall bearers were all present and were Wilford Williams, Ezra Cravens, David Meredith, John Boyle, David Stanley and Thomas White."
