JAMES CHEDESTER DIES SATURDAY; RITES ON TUESDAY
James L. Chedester

James L. Chedester, of Grinnell, died Saturday evening at a local nursing home. He was observing his 84th birthday that day. He had been a resident of the nursing home since suffering a stoke 12 years ago.

Funeral services are to be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Coop, pastor of the Grinnell Christian church, officiating. Organ music will be provided by Mrs. Roy Coop.

Serving as pallbearers will be Max Chedester, Glen Chedester, Jack Chedester, Jerry Chedester, Brainard Chedester, and Floyd Hunter. Interment will be in Hazelwood cemetery.

He was the eldest son of Benjamin F. and Mary Tyrell Chedester and was born at Albia, Ia., May 23, 1880. He attended the Monroe county rural schools and on Dec. 13, 1938, was united in marriage with Catherine McKibben at Newton.

Survivors include one brother, Kester Chedester of Albia; eight stepchildren, Mrs. Leona Thomas of Grinnell, Mrs. Stella Wisnewski of San Diego, Claif., William Beck of Minneapolis, Minn., Jake Geier of Oskaloosa, Mrs Hazel Holtz of Des Moines, John Geier of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Mary Hittle of Oskaloosa, and Mrs. Mildred Duncan of Tolar, Tex.; one half-brother, Milton Gibson of Albia; and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife, Catherine, on June 10, 1951; his father in 1907; his mother in 1917; and one brother and several half- brothers and half-sisters.

He had resided in Grinnell since 1910 and was employed in farm work for many years. He was a member of the Christian church at Albia.
