Joe Griffin Dies; Former Newton resident, Teacher
Ottumwa – Joe Griffin, a former resident and teacher in Newton, died Saturday afternoon in Ottumwa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ottumwa First United Methodist Church, 202 E. 4th St.
Mr. Griffin was a 1927 Newton Community High School graduate, president of the senior class, a football quarterback and active in speech and debate.
After being graduated from Cornell College at Mount Vernon, he returned to Newton to teach high school social studies, debate and speech.
He received his law degree from Drake University in Des Moines and had practiced law in Ottumwa for many years.
Mr. Griffin had served as a member and president of the Ottumwa Board of Education.
He also preached at a rural church near Ottumwa for several years.
Surviving are his wife, the former Rosanne Wilton, formerly of Newton, and a son.
