The Newton Record Thursday, May 18 1899
Cavell, W. B.

Mr. W. B. Cavell died at his home in this city on Friday, May 12th, having but recently passed his seventy-fourth year. He had been in poor health during most of the past winter; but his friend had hoped that with the return of spring would come a change for the better in his condition. But their hopes were not to be realized and he continued to grow worse, notwithstanding the constant care of family and physician, and for the past four weeks had been confined to his bed. He was a good man in the fullest sense, and in his death Newton has lost one of its best and most exemplary citizens.

Mr. Cavell was born in Bodman, Cornwell County, England, in April 1825, and when a lad of twelve years, came to America with his parents, who first settled in Delaware. In after years he moved to Illinois, and fifty-two years ago he was married in Mason County, that state, to Miss Lucy L. Ashby, a union which proved a most happy one. The wife who traveled by his side for over a half century survives him. To them had been born eleven children, seven of whom are still living, viz., J. Frank of Ames, Ia., Chas. A. of Hillsboro, Ore., Mrs. James Mowers of Atkinson, Ill., Mrs. L. W. France of Reasnor, Ia., Arthur M. of Prescott, Ariz., Harry of Laurel, Ia., and Miss Jessie C. at home, all of whom except Charles and Arthur being by the bedside of their father during the closing days of his long and useful life.

The family came to Iowa twenty-two years ago and settled on a farm in Palo Alto Township where they remained until eight years ago, when Mr. and Mrs. Cavell and their two youngest children moved to Newton, having a beautiful home over on Scott Street. Mr. Cavell was a Methodist during his younger days, but before leaving Illinois united with the Congregational Church, and had been a faithful attendant at that church since he came to Newton.

Funeral services were held at the home at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. C. Harrah, assisted by Rev. C. V. Cowan.
