Karen Carlson, 37, of 411 N. 3rd Ave. E., died of breast cancer, Saturday, May 3, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. Matthew Martens, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home in Newton after 2 p.m. Tuesday, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

The daughter of B.F. and Betty Kenyon Carlson, she was born Feb. 21, 1960, in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1978 and from Central College in Pella in 1984.

She married Steven L. Joy Aug. 18, 1988, in Seattle, Wash.

After graduating from college she taught English in Nice, France. She was employed as a residential instructor at Progress Industries in Newton. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Newton and the Local UAW No. 997.

She had lived in France, Switzerland, South America and Seattle, Wash. before moving back to Newton in 1989.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Sophie-Noelle and Madeleine Joy; a son, Aksel Carlson; her mother; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Ronald Shockey of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother in infany.
