JULY 15, 1941 ~ JULY 29, 2019 (AGE 78)

Judith “Judie” LaVonne Butin, 78, of Newton died on Monday, July 29, 2019, at Park Centre. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2019, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, August 1, at the funeral home. Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Salvation Army may be left at the funeral home.

Judie, the daughter of Joseph and Hazel (Berkenbosch) Tomlonovic, was born on July 15, 1941, in Storm Lake. She grew up in Jasper County living in rural Kellogg and later north of Newton. Judie was a graduate of Newton High School in the class of 1959. In 1961, Judie received her Stenographic Diploma from AIB in Des Moines. She had worked for the Newton Community Schools and the Maytag Company before becoming a Jasper County Adult Probation /Parole Officer for over 20 years, retiring in 1998. On January 14, 1973, Judie was united in marriage with Bob Butin at the Community Reformed Church. She was a member of the Newton Community School Board and served two years as their Vice President. She was the President of the Iowa Corrections Association and a member of the American Correctional Association and the American Probation and Parole Association. Judie was active in local substance abuse prevention programs, volunteered in the law office at Living History Farms, and served on the Board of Iowa Children and Family Services. Judie was also a member of the Newton Community Reformed Church, now known as the Newton Church of The Way, where she was the first woman Deacon. Judie enjoyed spending time at their home in Bellevue on the Mississippi River. She also loved being with her grandchildren.

Judie is survived by her husband, Bob Butin of Newton; daughter, Lesa (Steve) Chedester of Newton; her step-children, Bob (Bonnie) Butin of Garner, Joe (Dixie) Butin of Olathe, Kansas and Victoria Crook of Newton; grandchildren, Mackenzie Udelhoven, Brice (Margot) Udelhoven, Rylie Udelhoven (Brady Woody), Patti (Jason) Hanson, Bradley (Kaili) Butin, James Butin, Jesse Butin Lance Jones, Aaron Jones, Katie Constant, and Patrick Constant; and her many great-grandchildren.
