KNOXVILLE -- Garold Altes, 85, of Knoxville, formerly of Mingo, died Monday, May 10, at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Assembly of God Church in Knoxville. Burial with military honors will be at the Graham Cemetery in Mingo at 2 p.m.

Visitation will be held today at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God Church or to the Alzheimer's Association.

The son of Maggie Mae Hall and George Altes, he was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Mingo. He also lived in Des Moines, Marshalltown and Prairie City before moving to a farm near Knoxville in 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Jan. 14, 1939, he married Mary Jane Yoakum in Bethany, Mo.

Mr. Altes worked as a carpenter building corncribs and silos before becoming a fulltime farmer. He retired in 1976 and moved into Knoxville. He was a member of Assembly of God Church in Knoxville.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Alvin Bassett of Des Moines and Sandy and Denny Miller of Carlisle; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, Wednesday, May 12, 2004
