Delbert "Del" F. White, 74, of Newton died Thursday at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call at the First United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service. The family requests memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Jasper County, Skiff Medical Center, 204 N. Fourth Ave. E., Newton 50208.

The son of Francis (Martin) White and Sarah Angelica Van Brocklin, he was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Rockford, Ill. On Nov. 25, 1953, he married Helen Virginia Carter in the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He graduated from Waterloo East High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948-1952 and was deployed to Japan during the Korean War. He received a bachelor of arts in education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, after which he taught high school for 10 years.

He held several Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development positions around the state of Iowa including Sioux City, Muscatine, Spencer and Ottumwa. He retired in 1996 as president of Jasper County Alliance for Economic
Development in Newton. Since his retirement he was actively involved as a volunteer for Service Corps of Retired Executives and Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve. He also lived in Muscatine, Sioux City, Spencer and Ottumwa.

Mr. White was president of the Iowa Chamber of Commerce Executives from 1985-1986. He received the Statesman of the Year award from the Iowa Department of Economic Development in 1986. He was also active in Rotary Club and served as president of the Muscatine Rotary Club from 1986-1987.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Bruce Huseby of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Kris White of Altoona, and Steve and Traci White of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. ~ Newton Daily News, Friday, June 4, 2004
