ROANOKE, Va. -- Daniel James Lewis Jr., 82, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, May 5.

Services were held at Oakey's South Chapel in Virginia. Burial was at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials will be accepted to Cave Springs Rescue Squad, 3206 Valley Forge Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24018.

The son of Daniel James Lewis Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Wake) Lewis, he was born May 6, 1921, in Albia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in General MacArthur's Headquarters in the Philippines and Japan. He graduated from Iowa State University in December 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He was recalled to service in 1951 for the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia J.; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas Alan and Terri, Daniel James III, Frederick Charles, Joseph Howard and Susan, all of Roanoke, and Terence Raymond of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a daughter, Carol Ann Thomas of Roanoke; three granddaughters; two sisters, Elizabeth Mosher of Silver Springs, Md., and Wilma Thorson of Des Moines; one brother, Roger Lewis of Raleigh, N.C.; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harvey, Howard, William and Robert; and three sisters, Dorothy, Annabelle and Jeanne. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, Wednesday, June 2, 2004
