Joseph "Joe" Herbold, 82, died Thursday, June 17, at Park Centre.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation is scheduled from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church, and a public prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Pence-Reese Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of William Joseph and Mary Cecilia (Maher) Herbold, he was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Des Moines. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, and he attended Colfax Country School and graduated from Dowling High School in Des Moines, where he was an All-State Tackle.

On April 15, 1944, he was united in marriage with Lucille Ward. Mr. Herbold loved the land and enjoyed farming. Following the death of his first wife, he married Marjorie Cross on Jan. 30, 1993.

Mr. Herbold was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Jasper County Farm Bureau, the Newton Elks Lodge and the Newton Moose Lodge. He enjoyed going to the Lake of the Woods, camping and raising tomatoes. He also enjoyed researching and writing about the genealogy and history of his family and Jasper County.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Herbold of Newton; a step-son, Darrell Cross; two step-daughters, Diane Hansen and Susan Mooers; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and 17 special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille; and his brother, Gerald. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Saturday, June 19, 2004
