PRAIRIE CITY -- Paul Van Gorp, 90, of Prairie City died Friday, Aug. 13, at Taylor House in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City with the Rev. Adrian Eising and the Rev. Thomas Wetselaar officiating. Burial will follow at Waveland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. The family has designated the Cary Christian Center, the "Back to God Hour" or the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, as the recipients of any memorial gifts.

The son of Nicholas and Nellie (Kooyman) Van Gorp, he was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Peoria. He attended Plainview and Pella Christian Grade Schools. Upon completing his schooling, he began farming with his father outside the Pella, Rising Sun and Prairie City areas. On Feb. 22, 1945, he married Doris Ruth Steenhoek on her father's farm near Prairie City. They retired from farming in 1980 and moved to their current residence in Prairie City. He enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, gardening, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Van Gorp was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City where he served for many years as a deacon and elder, as well as a member of the board for the Prairie City Christian Grade School.

Survivors include his wife Doris; five daughters and sons-in-law Ruth and Elmer Vos of New Sharon, Betty and Dale Van Donselaar, June and Paul VandeNoord, Shirley and Ken Zylstra, all of Pella, and Joan Van Gorp of Prairie City; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Almira Van Gorp of Pella, Pearl and Gerrit Van Ryswyk of Peoria, Ariz., and Ruthann and Bob Gosselink of Pella; and one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Lenore Van Gorp of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son in infancy, Marlin Paul; one brother, Garret Van Gorp; two sisters, Helene Kolenbrander and Cornelia Leeuw; and one son-in-law, Jim Van Zee. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Saturday, August 14, 2004
