MARSHALLTOWN -- Helen Toedt, 103, of Marshalltown died Thursday, July 1, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill with Fr. Louis Jaeger as the celebrant. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery, one-half mile west of Laurel. Friends may call at the Estel-Perrin-Avery Funeral Home in Marshalltown on Monday from 5 to 9 p.m., where the family will be present. A public rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m.
She graduated in 1918 and began a 30-year teaching career on her 18th birthday in a one-room country school. She spent her last 15 years of teaching at the Laurel Consolidated School, where she retired at the age of 69. She also taught in the Newton area. She loved teaching and her students.
She met Dell Toedt after he returned from serving in World War II. They began their 44-year marriage on May 12, 1923, and lived in the Laurel community for the rest of their lives.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dell Charles and Gloria Toedt of San Antonio, Jack and Ann Toedt of Newport Beach, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and James Herendeen of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Saturday, July 3, 2004
