Herbert Clifton "Tip" Tipton, 79, of Newton died Thursday, July 1, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, Skiff Medical Center chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in the veterans section at Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service, where the family will be present. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in Herbert's name or to Hospice of Jasper County.
The son of Herbert W. and Beulah Christine Yardley Tipton, he was born May 24, 1925, in Milan, Mo. in Sullivan County. He was a graduate of Milan High School. He lived in Milan, Mo., until moving to the Newton area in 1946, where he lived the remainder of his life.
He married Mary Lou Weaver on Aug. 27, 1946, in Troy, Kan. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He worked as a truck driver and mechanic for the City of Newton for 23 years and for Cooper-Colan Concrete Company for 17 years.
Herbert was a member of Newton VFW Post #1655 and the Teamsters Union with the city.Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Charles Reed of Milan, Mo., Glenda and Richard Crook, Sheryl and Denny Agan, Barbara Jo and Ron Mullins, and Joni Leigh and Randy Vanderleest, all of Newton; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wanda Jean and Mrs. Bob Hollon, both of Milan, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, on Aug. 25, 1977; and two sons, Jim in 1969 and Terry in 1997. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Saturday, July 3, 2004
