Hugh F. Smith, 76, of Newton died Thursday, Aug. 26, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Jim Olson of Zoar Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the American Lung Association and may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Charles and Agnes (Gibson) Smith, he was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Newton. He grew up and lived mostly in the Baxter and Newton areas until retiring. He moved to Manchester, Tenn., in 1980 until he returned to Newton in February of 2002. On March 17, 1956, he married Frances "Fran" Meadows in Princeton, Mo.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked in maintenance at Middle School in Hillsboro, Tenn. He enjoyed coin collecting, antiques and collectibles.Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Robin (Smith) Van Norden and husband Byron of Newton; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Bob Preston of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Frosty Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; two step-sons and daughter-in-law, Billy Jenkins of Winterset and Jim and Jane Jenkins of Newton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Chris and Barbara Smith and Wayne and Jean Smith, all of Newton; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ilis Hodgson of Newton, Helen and Clarene Faidley of Prairie City and Judy and Del Berg of Colfax.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a grandson and four brothers. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Friday, August 27, 2004
