Robert J. "Bob" Metz, 71, of Newton died Sunday, July 4, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Newton.

Friends may call today at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to Newton Izaak Walton League.

The son of Aloysius John Metz and Mary Colleen Bauer, he was born July 21, 1932, in Reasnor. He graduated from Newton Senior High School and served in the U.S. Navy. On May 3, 1958, he married Karyn VerDught in Newton. He was a pipe fitter in the maintenance department for the Maytag Company and retired after working for more than 44 years.

Mr. Metz was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, a member of the church choir for six years and a lifetime member of VFW Newton Post 1655 and Newton Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and walking his dog.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary Metz of Des Moines; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Pam Metz, Michael and Sonya Metz, Marty and Judy Metz and Monte and Angi Metz, all of Newton; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Frank Metz and Fred and Vi Metz, also of Newton.
