Alma C. Leavens, 89, of Newton died Friday, Aug. 20, at USA Healthcare in Newton.

Funeral services were held today at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Larry Spader of Community Heights Alliance Church officiating. Burial was at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Bernard and Magdelena (Peterson) Trueper, she was born Feb. 20, 1915, in Blunt, S.D. On Jan. 25, 1934, she married H.B. Leavens in Dennison. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, embroidery and cooking. She was a resident of Newton since 1934.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald L. and Lynn Leavens of Charlotte and Harold K. and Judy Leavens of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Daniel Hildenbrand of Burlington; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a great-great-grandson; four sisters; and two brothers. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Tuesday, August 24, 2004
