Ann L. Krumm, 77, of Newton died Monday, July 5, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A celebration of life service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

A visitation will be held at the church Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to First Lutheran Church in Newton.

The daughter of Oliver and Laura (Kaney) Klingner, she was born May 12, 1927, in Chanute, Kan. She was a graduate of Chanute High School in 1945 and the University of Iowa in 1951. On Feb. 28, 1953, she married Daniel J. Krumm. She and her husband moved to Newton where Ann taught in the public schools, and Dan began his career with the Maytag Corporation.

In 1962, she and her family moved to Belgium and later to Germany, where her husband served as manager of Maytag's European operations. The Krumms returned to Newton in 1967, where Dan continued to serve in various capacities with Maytag, including CEO and board chairman, until 1992. Mr. Krumm died in 1993.

Over the years, Mrs. Krumm devoted herself to numerous community activities. She directed plays for the Newton Community Theatre and served on the Skiff Hospital Auxiliary and the Newton Library Foundation Board. She also provided leadership and support to many local projects, including Skiff Hospital, the Newton Public Library, Progress Industries, Project Awake, the Daniel J. Krumm Horticultural Learning Center at the Newton Arboretum and the Iowa Sculpture Festival at Maytag Park.

She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Newton, where she helped organize funeral meals for more than 20 years.

She also served on the boards of Lutheran Social Services, the Des Moines Symphony Foundation, the Des Moines Metro Opera (and Guild), and the "Friends" of Iowa Public Television. She was a loyal supporter of many other organizations, including Grand View College, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the University of Iowa.

Mrs. Krumm received the Variety Club Humanitarian award in 1996, and in 2000 she was the recipient of the Newton Community Service Award. In 2001, she was named Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser by the Central Iowa Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

She enjoyed entertaining, travel, and gardening, playing tennis and skiing.

Survivors include two sons and their spouses, David and Sheri of Ames and Tim and Sarah of Iowa City and five grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, Dan, and her sister, Jane Miller, preceded her in death. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Wednesday, July 7, 2004
