J. A. Townsend Dies At 57 Years
Former Newton Drayman Dies Today After Lingering Illness
J. Albert Townsend, 57, life-long resident of Newton, died this morning at 11:30 o’clock at the county home, where he had been a resident for two weeks. Death was due to cancer of the lung.
Mr. Townsend had been in poor health since an illness of pneumonia two years ago. He was cared for at the home of a sister, Mrs. Mabel T. Owens, as long as she was able and was then taken to the county home.
Mr. Townsend was born in Newton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Townsend, pioneer settlers, and spent practically all of his life here.
He was employed for different transfer companies in Newton but had been unable to work for the last two years.
He never married.
Surviving relatives include four sisters, Mrs. T. B. Smith and Mrs. Owens of Newton; Mrs. Marion Bryant of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Rose Swafford of Oakland, Calif., and a brother, Harry Townsend of Valley Junction.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by a brother, John L. Townsend, and by a sister, Mrs. Esther Barton Carrier.
No funeral arrangements have been made.

Townsend Rites Scheduled For Friday Afternoon
Funeral services for J. A. Townsend, 57, life-long resident of Newton, will be conducted from the Morgan funeral home Friday at 2:30 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Interment will be in the Palo Alto cemetery.
Mr. Townsend died Tuesday morning, as the result of an illness of cancer of the lung. He had been in poor health since suffering pneumonia two years ago.

Funeral Rites Observed For J. A. Townsend
Funeral services for J. A. Townsend, 57, life-long resident of Newton, were held at the Morgan funeral home Friday at 2:30 p.m. Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church, was in charge.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Charles Schwarz, who sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “The City Foursquare.” Mrs. H. L. Redeen played the accompaniment.
Burial was made in the Palo Alto cemetery, south of Newton.
Pallbearers were Henry Kuhn, L. W. Scott, M. Hickman, John Campbell, William Wade and Charles Campbell.
Mr. Townsend died Tuesday morning following a lingering illness from cancer of the lung.
