John K. Stewart Dies at 78 Years
John K. Stewart, 78, long-time employee of the Maytag company, died Thursday night at his home, 1001 North Fourth Avenue East, following a prolonged illness of uremic poisoning.
Mr. Stewart was taken ill Feb. 2, of this year and had been bedfast for the last seven weeks.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church Sunday at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Born Near Lynnville
Mr. Stewart, son of Henry and Chloe Stewart, was born in Lynn Grove township, Jasper county, Ia., Aug. 7, 1859, the oldest of a family of four children.
He was united in marriage to Nellie Townsend Oct. 3, 1889, and to this union six children were born. A son, Archie, preceded his father in death, dying in 1913, at the age of 21 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Stewart farmed for a number of years in the Bethel neighborhood, but had lived in Newton and vicinity for the last 25 years. They had resided at the present home since 1917.
At Maytag 19 years
Mr. Stewart had been employed at the Maytag company for 19 years until illness forced him to retire last February.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club.
Surviving relatives include his wife; five daughters, Mabel, Grace, Mrs. Albert Chapman, Mrs. Elmer Wulf and Mrs. Harp Smith, all of Newton; a sister, Mrs. C. P. Ramsey of Newton, and two brothers, Ed and Frank Stewart, both of Grinnell.
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Don and Jean Chapman and Lois, Dickie and Judith Smith. A granddaughter, Ruth Anne Chapman, died in 1930, at the age of six years.

Hold Rites For John K. Stewart
Funeral Services Conducted Sunday at Methodist Episcopal Church
Funeral services for John K. Stewart, 78, were conducted from the First Methodist Episcopal church Sunday at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor.
Richard Toedt furnished the music for the rites, singing “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Jesus, Savior Pilot Me.” He was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. R. L. Jackson.
Pall Bearers
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers: W. F. Harvey, C. M. Sabin, John Miller, E. C. Smith, G. H. Nollen and C. B. Francisco.
Mrs. F. E. Wilson, Mrs. Ella Brodersen and Mrs. J. C. Gilbert were in charge of the flowers.
Those attending away from here were Mr. and Mrs. Eber Slater and Mrs. Lena Benskin of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Stewart and Carl Griffith of Grinnell; Mrs. Effie Rabe and son of Lake View, Ia., Verla Huston of Newburg; Mr. and Mrs. Charles McDonough and son, Don, of Schaller, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wheeler of Des Moines.
Died Thursday
Mr. Stewart died Thursday night following a long illness of uremic poisoning.
A native of Jasper county, he had lived in and near Newton for the last 25 years. He had been employed at the Maytag company for 19 years until illness forced him to retire last February.

He was preceded in death by a son, Archie, and by a granddaughter, Ruth Anne Chapman.
