Solve Mystery Of Train Death
J. B. Stone Took Own Life By Leaping in Front of Train Sunday.
The mystery of the identity of a man who apparently threw himself in the path of a Rock Island passenger train west of the city Sunday night was solved Monday night.
As tentatively identified by papers found on his body, the man was “J.B. Stone, “formerly of Moberly, Mo.
Positively Identified
Denman Cleaver, employed on Don Langmaid’s farm, positively identified Stone as the man he brought to Newton from Moberly Sunday, May 3.
Stone went to work for Albert Bunse, a farmer living near newton, Monday, May 4, and was employed on the farm until Saturday afternoon – when he quit his job and said “something terrible is going to happen.”
According to Bunse, Stone said several times last week – as he worked with some mules on the farm – that:
“You gotta kill me or the mules will kill me.”
Cleaver came to Morgan’s funeral home Monday at about 8 p.m. and made the identification. He had not known of Stone’s death until talked to over the telephone Monday afternoon by funeral home employees.
He said he lived in Moberly before coming to Iowa and that he had gone to visit there Sunday, May 3.
Cleaver’s sister called from Moberly Monday night and told Mrs. Langmaid that she had head of the death over the radio. When told that Stone had been identified she informed Stone’s wife and seven children.
Stone’s body will be taken back to Missouri tonight. Mahan and Son’s funeral home in Moberly is sending for the remains and the burial will be made at Moberly.
No reason for Stone’s apparent suicide has been determined.
