C. O. Rider, 87, Dies at Colfax
Long-time Resident of Jasper County Dies After Three-Month Illness
COLFAX – C. O. Rider, 87, long-time resident of Jasper county, died today at 4:00 a.m. at the Colfax sanitarium, following a three-month illness.
Mr. Rider, member of The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club, would have observed his eighty-eighth birthday anniversary March 29.
He was born March 29, 1849, at Chardon, O., and was the last surviving member of a family of 10 children.
He came to Jasper county from Stockton, Ia., in 1867, and was married to Elizabeth M. Brown in 1873. They lived on a farm near Ira for many years.
Mrs. Rider died eight years ago and two years later Mr. Rider moved to Colfax, where he and his daughter, Jennie, lived at the time of his death.
Mr. Rider was a member of the Christian church.
Surviving relatives include eight daughters, Mrs. W. S. Westbrook and Mrs. Beulah Wyatt of Newton, Mrs. J. J. Jahn of Burt, Mrs. F. A. Baker and Mrs. J. L. Coughlan of Mingo, Jennie Rider of Colfax, Mrs. Earl Moyer of Valley Junction, and Mrs. Lee Dodd of Glendale, Calif., and one son, Warren Rider of Newton.

Funeral Rites To Be Held In Colfax Thursday
COLFAX – Funeral services for C. O. Rider, 87, will be conducted from the Cutter-Hartnett funeral chapel in Colfax Thursday at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Russell G. Nye of the Methodist church. Interment will be in Union Chapel cemetery, northwest of Ira.
Mr. Rider, resident of Jasper county for over half a century, died Tuesday morning following a three-month illness.
Surviving are eight daughters, one son, and a sister, Mrs. Myra Brown, 91, of Des Moines.

Conduct Rites For C. O. Rider
Services For County Pioneer Held in Colfax; burial at Union Chapel
COLFAX – Funeral services for C. O. Rider, 87, a pioneer of Jasper county, were conducted from the Cutter-Hartnett chapel in Colfax Thursday, March 18, at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. Russell G. Nye, pastor of the Methodist church.
John A. Davis furnished the music, singing two numbers. He was accompanied by Mrs. S. E. Tennant.
Interment was in the Union Chapel cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: R. S. John, Stanley Baker, Max Wyatt and Vincent McDermott, grandsons and Clifford Baker and Raymond Iske.
From Out of Town
Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the rites were Mrs. Miriam Brown and Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Witmer of Des Moines and the Witmer’s son, Guy Witmer, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nolte of Stuart and their daughter, Mrs. Irene Smith of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Lair, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Mann and son, and Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Caughlan of Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. Vincent McDermott of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Clark John and Rose E. John of Maxwell and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Clark of Valley Junction.
Mr. Rider died Tuesday, March 16, at the Colfax sanitarium following a several weeks illness. Death was due to gangrene and infirmities of old age.
He was born at Chardon, Ohio, March 29, 1869, and came to Jasper county in 1867. With the exception of the past few years in Colfax, he spent his entire life on the farm and had lived 64 years in the same neighborhood northeast of Colfax.
Marriage
He was united in marriage Jan. 1, 1873, at Stockton, Ia., to Elizabeth M. Brown, who preceded him in death June 9, 1920.
Mr. Rider was a charter member of the Ira Christian church.
Surviving relatives include nine children, Mrs. W. S. Westbrook of Newton, Mrs. J. J. John of Burt, Mrs. F. A. Baker of Mingo, Mrs. J. L. Coughlan of Mingo, Warren Rider of Newton, Mrs. Lee Dodd of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Earl Moyer of Valley Junction, Mrs. Beulah Wyatt of Newton and Jennie Rider of Colfax, and a sister, Mrs. Miriam Brown, 91, of Des Moines. All of the children were present for the service, with the exception of Mrs. Dodd.
