James "Jim" F. Herrington, 68, formerly of Newton died Sunday, Aug. 8.

A memorial service will be held Friday at the Borek-Jennings Funeral Home in Hamburg, Mich. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The son of Harry and Mary (Balmer) Harrington, he was born Feb. 12, 1936, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1954. While in high school, he was a running back for the Newton Senior High School football team in 1952 and 1953. In 1952, Newton won the State Football Championship. In June 1958, he married Betty Dimon. He spent his entire career as a pilot for ZanTop Freight Airline based at Detroit, Mich.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Rick Haney of Lakeland, Mich.; three grandchildren; three sisters, twin sister Janice Varner of Kingsburg, Calif., Margaret Harmon and her husband Charles of Little Falls, Minn., LaVola Trout and her husband Les of rural Newton; a sister-in-law, Barb Trotter and her husband Larry of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a son, Randy. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Tuesday, August 10, 2004
