Betty D. Hedges, 73, of Newton died Friday, July 16, at the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Newton Union Cemetery with the Rev. Brian Keeton of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiating. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or to the American Diabetes Association and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Earl E. and Doris (Bird) Hedges, she was born March 26, 1931, in Jasper County. She lived in Drakesville from 1964 to 1991 and lived the rest of her life in Newton. She worked at Progress Industries until she retired.

Survivors include two nieces and their husbands, Sherrie and Sam Decker of Mapleton, Ill., and Sue and Richard Ditmer of Kellogg, and several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lawrence "Bud" and Dale "Red" Hedges; and a sister, Edith E. Verwers. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Monday, July 19, 2004
