Margie Lou Hoen, 77, of Newton died Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from noon until 7 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will be available from 5 to 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name or to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines.

The daughter of John W. and Lula (Kimler) Nichols, she was born May 17, 1927, in Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1943. On May 31, 1946, she married Robert Hoen in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a stringer, a writer, for the Newton Daily News and the Des Moines Register and worked as a sales representative for the Vernon Company in Newton.

Mrs. Hoen was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed her family and grandchildren, flowers, gardening, baking and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include a son, Tom Hoen of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Dennis Parrott of Newton and Kathy and Gary Henry of Fairfield; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Gary and Shirley Hoen of Joplin, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Carol Hawkins of Altoona and Marge Niewald of Chico, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Denny Hoen; and three brothers, Stedman, Stillman and Joe Nichols. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Thursday, August 5, 2004
