Infant Daughter of Former Local Residents, Dies
An infant daughter, Sylvia Ann, born Sunday to Dr. and Mrs. F. L. Phillips of Bronson, Mich., died shortly after birth at the Sturgis Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Bronson and burial was in the Bronson cemetery.
Both Dr. and Mrs. Phillips are former residents of Newton and graduates of the local high school. Mrs. Phillips will be remembered as Nita Shaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Shaw of Des Moines, but formerly of Newton.
The baby is survived by her parents; a brother, Ronald, 2; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw of Des Moines, and her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Phillips of DeSoto, Ia. She was a niece of Mrs. V. E. Grant and Mrs. Leslie Bean of Newton and Mrs. Joe Mayhew of Des Moines.
The following poem, written by Mrs. Phillips, was read by the minister at the funeral services:
My Prayer
Little brown-eyed chubby face,
Rosebud lips and dimpled chin,
A bit of heaven to embrace,
So much happiness tucked within.
I love your darling little fists,
Your little knees, your little toes.
You’re one of heaven’s most precious gifts,
Love that drowns all earthly woes.
Your very touch is an angel’s kiss,
Lovely petals from God’s own garden,
Giving me sweet immeasurable bliss,
Little brown-eyed babe, my darlin’.
And so I dream –
Thank thee God for this babe in dreams,
I cannot have her in flesh it seems,
So let her come each night this way,
A bit of heaven, my babe, I pray.
