GRINNELL -- Nathan P. Figland, 20, of rural Grinnell died Sunday, Aug. 8, of injuries he sustained in an auto accident at Rock Creek Lake near Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Grinnell Christian Church with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Burial will be at Rock Creek Cemetery near Grinnell. The Grinnell Wrestling Boosters will host a luncheon at the Grinnell Christian Church following the service.

Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m.

The son of Nick and Kristy (Keenan) Figland, he was born June 29, 1984, in Grinnell. He was raised in the Rock Creek area and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 2003. He was a member of the Grinnell High School wrestling, soccer and baseball teams. He worked for the Depot Crossing and the HW Brand Company. He was enrolled at Southeastern Community College for the fall semester. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and collecting shads. He also showed mules at the Iowa and Missouri state fairs and was a New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include his parents; one brother, Cory Figland of rural Grinnell; his paternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Linda Mae and Lowell Goemaat of Lynnville; his paternal great-grandmother, Mabel Lewis of Searsboro; and his maternal great-grandmother, Iola Cooper of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Chester Figland, and his maternal grandparents, Hollis and Betty Keenan. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Tuesday, August 10, 2004
