Stroke Fatal to Mrs. Meredith
Life-long Resident of Jasper County Dies at Searsboro Tuesday
LYNNVILLE – Mrs. Jennie Sparks Meredith, 78, native resident of Jasper county, died Tuesday at 11:00 p.m. at the home of a son, Jesse Meredith, near Searsboro.
Mrs. Meredith suffered a light stroke Nov. 20, and a second one last Saturday, which resulted in paralysis of her left side. She had been unconscious since Monday.
Mrs. Meredith was born at Lynnville Jan. 2, 1859, and lived in that community all of her life with the exception of a few years near Rippey. She was one of a family of 16 children, 10 of whom are living.
She was married to Marshall Meredith at Lynnville Dec. 13, 1877, her husband preceding her in death 17 years ago.
Mrs. Meredith was a member of the Methodist church and The Three Quarter Century club.
She is survived by five children, Mrs. Leota Riley of Perry, Mrs. Merle Razz of Jamaica, Jesse of Searsboro, and Owen and Bert of Lynnville; 30 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are 10 brothers and sisters, George, William, Edd and Milton Sparks of Lynnville, Mrs. Mary Van Gorkum of Taintor, Mrs. Elizabeth Turner, Mrs. Harriett Turner and Mrs. Eliza Shepherd, all of Lynnville, Mrs. Nellie Jay of Grinnell, and Mrs. Florence Hull of Taintor.

LYNNVILLE – Margaret Jane Meredith, daughter of William P. and Angaline Sparks, was born near Lynnville, Ia., Jan. 2, 1859 and died at the home of her son, Jesse Meredith near Searsboro, Ia., on Nov. 30 at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 28 days.
On Nov. 20 she suffered a light stroke while visiting her sister, Mrs. Mary Korkum, at Oskaloosa, Ia. On Thanksgiving day she was taken to the home of her son, Jesse Meredith, where on the following Saturday she suffered the second stroke which paralyzed her left side. She later became unconscious and death came as a relief to her suffering.
She was of a family of 16 children, 10 of whom are living.
She was married to Marshall Meredith at Lynnville on Dec. 13, 1877. To this union five children were born, Jesse Meredith of near Searsboro, Owen Meredith of Lynnville, Mrs. Leota Riley of Perry, Ia., Bert Meredith of Lynnville and Mrs. Merle Raas of Jamaica, Ia. thirty grand children and 34 great grandchildren also survive.
In the fall of 1886 the family moved to Boone county, where they resided until 1917 when Mr. Meredith’s health failed him and they moved back to Lynnville. Mr. Meredith died March 5, 1921.
Surviving brothers and sisters are George, Ed, Milton, and William Sparks, all of Lynnville, Mrs. Mary Van Gorkum of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Elizabeth Turner, Mrs. Hattie Turner and Mrs. Ella Shepherd of Lynnville, Mrs. Ella Shepherd of Lynnville, Mrs. Mellie Jay and Mrs. Flora Hull of Taintor.
She was a member of the Methodist church and The Three Quarter Century club.
Funeral services were conducted from the Friends church, Friday afternoon, Dec. 3, with Rev. Ed Thompson of Sully and Rev. Ermin Perisho of Lynnville conducting the services.
“In the Garden,” “No Night There,” and “Going Down the Valley,” were sung by Mrs. Harvey Gause and Mrs. Will Allee with Mrs. A. F. Quire as accompanist.
Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Glen Brignon and Mrs. Robert Stufflebeam.
Six grandsons, Melvin, Marshall and Lowell Meredith, Coyle C. Riley of Des Moines, Austin Meredith of Silvis, Ill., and Fred Raaz of Jamaica were pall bearers. Burial was in the Woodland cemetery.
Attending from a distance were Austin Meredith and Mrs. Calude Allee of Silvis, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Waterman of Topeka, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Clement Boynston, Mrs. Claude Riley and Joyce of Perry, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Raaz and Fred, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Anderson of Jamaica, Coyle Riley and Mrs. Myrtle Beckley of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jay, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Sparks, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Meredith, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Burnham of Grinnell, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ponder, Mr. and Mrs. Myron Brayton of Murphy, Mrs. Mary Van Gorkum, Leo Van Gorkum, and Mr. and Mrs. Will Van Gorkum of Oskaloosa, Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Hull and Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hull and Landon of Taintor.
