Former Newton Resident Dies
Benjamin McEwen, 91, Dies at Marshalltown; Burial in Newton Today
Benjamin McEwen, 91-year-old former Newton resident, died early Saturday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sue Merritt in Marshalltown. He had been critically ill for the past two weeks following a paralytic stroke.
Mr. McEwin was a long time residentof Jasper county having come to Monroe from Boston, Mass. In the 1860’s and later moved to Newton in the 1890’s. His wife preceded him in death in 1917.
Funeral services were to be held in the Estel funeral home in Marshalltown, Iowa, at 1:30 Monday afternoon, after which the body was to be brought to Newton for interment beside his wife in the Newton Union cemetery.
Surviving relatives are three daughters, Mrs. Merritt, Mrs. Bess Cain of Deep River, Ia., and Mrs. Fred Emerson of St. Louis, Mo., and one son, Edward McEwen of Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mrs. Sam Fleming of Newton is a granddaughter of Mr. McEwen.

Benjamin McEwen was born in Campbellton, New London, Prince Edward Island, Canada, on July 31, 1846, and died Aug. 28, 1937 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sue Merritt in Marshalltown, Iowa, at the age of 91 years.
He grew to manhood in Cambellton and in 1872 he was married to Miss Margaret McEwen (not a relative) in Boston, Mass. Where they made their home for a number of years. Later they came to Monroe, Ia., where they lived for 13 years, then moved to Newton, which was their home until Mrs. McEwen’s death in 1917, after which Mr. McEwen spent part of his time in Newton and part with his daughters, Mrs. Merritt and Mrs. Bess Cain of Deep River. He had been living at the Merritt home for the past 6 years.
Mr. McEwen formerly worked as a carpenter and contractor, and was an employee of the late Fred Bergman at the time the first One Minute washer was built, and assisted in the construction of the machine.
He had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for 60 years, and was a member of the Presbyterian church at Monroe, Ia.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Mrs. Merritt, Mrs. Cain and Mrs. Fred Emerson of St. Louis, Mo., and one son, Edward McEwen of Excelsior Springs, Mo. One daughter, Mrs. Lou Kennedy, died in 1901. Grandchildren include Raymond Cain and Mrs. Melvin Elliott of Deep River, Ia., Karl McEwen of Florida, and Mrs. Sam Fleming of Newton. He also had three great grandchildren, Betty Mae Cain and Mary Margaret Elliott of Deep River and Sam Fleming, jr., of Newton.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 30, from the Estel Funeral home in Marshalltown, Ia., Dr. Robert C. Mitchell, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Marshalltown, in charge. Pall bearers were Melvin Elliott and Raymond Cain of Deep River, Robert __ mell and Joe Wehrman of Marshalltown and Sam Fleming, __ Sam Fleming, jr., of Newton. Burial was in the Newton Union cemetery.
