Frank F. Laird Dies In Virginia
Former Jasper County Man Dies At Age 58; Relatives Here
The many Newton friends of Frank F. Laird will be grieved to learn of his death at his home in Richmond, Va., last Sunday noon at 12:30 o’clock. Mr. Laird was a brother of Mrs. Hattie Bodley of this community, Mrs. U. S. Townsend of Newton, Mrs. Stella Miller of Brightwater, L. I., and Herbert __ of Minneapolis. His wife also survives him.
Frank Laird was born in 1879 at ___, Iowa. When nine months of age, he came to Newton with his father and mother, the late Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Laird. He attended the Newton public schools and at only 15 years of age he was apprenticed as a train dispatcher for the M. & St. L. in this city. Later he went to Marshalltown, where he had further experience as a train dispatcher. He worked at various railroad offices throughout the country during his life. He moved to the top in his profession and for the last ten years he as been superintendent of train dispatchers for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad at Richmond.
Mr. Laird was a self made man in every sense of the word, having moved from the bottom straight to the top. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a thirty-one degree Mason. He was married to Vesta Craven at Shrevesport, La., June 6, 1901.
The Laird family was one of the well known in this community and the many friends of Frank will be sad to learn of his passing.
