Monroe Woman Dies Here Today
Mrs. V. R. Jarnagin, 37, of Monroe died today at 7:25 a.m. at the Skiff Memorial hospital, following an operation submitted to Monday. Death was attributed to surgical shock.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. from the Methodist Episcopal church in Monroe, with the pastor, the Rev. R. R. Moser, in charge.
Mrs. Jarnagin, who was Hazel Thomas before her marriage, was preceded in death by her father, G. J. Thomas, two years ago, and by a brother, just two months ago.
Surviving are her husband; two children, Robert, 14, and Dale, 10; her mother, Mrs. G. J. Thomas of Ottumwa; six brothers and two sisters.

MONROE – Hazel La Vern (Thomas) Jarnigan was born at Atwood, Kansas, Jan. 22, 1900 and died at the Skiff hospital in Newton, Ia., Tuesday morning, March 2. On Oct. 12,, 1918 she was united in marriage to Vern Jarnigan in Monroe, Iowa. Soon after their marriage they moved to southern Kansas, where they lived for approximately two years. They then returned to Monroe, Iowa, where Mrs. Jarnigan has lived ever since.
Two boys, Robert Thomas and Dale Henry, were born to this union. They with their father, their grandmother, Mrs. Ida Thomas, of Ottumwa, and six brothers and two sisters, survive.
The living brothers and sisters of Mrs. Jarnigan are: Will and Glenn, of Arkansas City, Kans.; Claude, Leroy and Jack of Ottumwa, Howard, of Richland, Ia.; Mrs. Dorotha Redfinger, of Richland, Ia., and Mrs. Eva Barnett, of Ottumwa.
At the age of 16, Mrs. Jarnigan became a member of the Church of Christ in Oskaloosa, Ia. A few years ago she transferred her membership to the Methodist church of Monroe, Ia.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, at the M. E. church, by the Rev. R. R. Moser. Mrs. Mark Shaw and Mrs. Ray Shaffer sang two numbers “In The Garden” and “Rock of Ages,” accompanied at the piano by Mrs. James Brown.
Pallbearers were Bob Tice, Howard Herwehe, Guy Wilson, Laurel Buckley, Hubert Jarnigan, and Leo Sweeney. Interment was in the Monroe cemetery.
