Pioneer Family
The Matchett family was one of the old pioneer families of Jasper county. The father and mother of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. David J. Matchett, lived for many years on a farm about six miles south of Newton in Palo Alto township. They retired to Newton where they spent their declining years. The mother of the deceased, Mrs. Joan Hill Matchett, was a member of the large Hill family which came to Palo Alto township in the early fifties.
The following complete obituary of Mrs. Jameson was read at the funeral service which was conducted in Chicago yesterday:
Born in Log Cabin
Elizabeth Matchett Jameson was born in a log cabin on a farm in Palo Alto Township near Newton, Iowa, on October 18, 1861. She was the eldest daughter born to David J. and Joan Hill Matchett, who were pioneer settlers in Jasper county. She first attended the rural schools, then Hazel Dell Academy conducted in Newton by Darious Thomas; was for one year a student at Monmouth College, and in 1886 was graduated from the Washington Academy at Washington, Iowa. Afterwards she taught school in Iowa and Illinois.
On January, 1889, she was married to William A. Jameson of Hanover, Illinois. They settled on the homestead farm near Hanover, where their two daughters, Jennie Marie, afterwards Mrs. William T. McClenahan, and Emily, now Mrs. Glen McGrew, were born. On July 6, 1897, the husband passed away. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Jameson moved from the farm to a new home in Hanover, where the family continued to reside until desiring further educational advantages she moved to Monmouth, Illinois, where her daughters graduated. The daughters having accepted positions in the schools of Iowa, Mrs. Jameson moved to Chicago and became a member of the family of Judge and Mrs. David F. Matchett, and continued as a member of the family until the time of her death. She was in attendance when the children were born, and in this home her daughters were married, establishing thereafter homes of their own in the same neighborhood, in which also resided their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew C. Limage.
With a loyalty which was characteristic of her, Mrs. Jameson devoted the remainder of her life to her children, her grandchildren, and her nephews. In 1933, Mrs. McClenahan passed away. Notwithstanding the passing of the years, Mrs. Jameson always retained the spirit of her youth.
Member of U. P. Church
When a young girl she professed her faith in Christ in the Palo Alto United Presbyterian church of which Rev. James A. Ferguson was then pastor. Upon her marriage she transferred her membership to Hanover, Ill., where she and her husband were earnest and active in religious work. In Chicago she became a member of the Woodlawn church and has been active in her religious duties. She was much interested in the Women’s Missionary Society of which she was a life member, and at different times served as president of both the local and presbyterial organizations. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Winona Summer School of Missions; was a member of the Woodlawn Mothers’ Round Table, the local University Study and Shakespeare Clubs, the Women Voters League and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She was also a member of the Arche club.
Loyalty was the quality by which she was most distinguished. To her friends, to her family, to all good causes, and to the Savior to whom she had entrusted her life. He, she believed, would keep that which she had committed to him.
By her request, the body was laid to rest on the family lot in the cemetery at Newton, Ia., where now sleep her father, mother, oldest brother, Hugh T., and youngest sister, Jennie. There survive her, a daughter, Mrs. Emily McGrew of Elmhurst, her four grandchildren, Jean and Jameson McGrew and William and Martha McClenahan, her sister, Mrs. Andrew C. Limage, her brother, Judge David F. Matchett, and two nephews, David F. Matchett, Jr., and Hugh M. Matchett.
