Newton Man, 88, Dies at Home
William Herbold, 88, died at his home near Newton early today. He had been ill about two weeks.
Born in Germany, May 3, 1849, Mr. Herbold was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Herbold.
Survivors include three brothers and two sisters. They are Chris Herbold, Colfax, A. C. Herbold, L. P. Herbold, and Mrs. Sophia Carrier, all of Newton, and Mrs. Minnie Armstrong of San Gabriel, Calif.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Newton Evangelical Lutheran church. Burial will be in Newton Union cemetery. The Rev. Fredrick D. Boldt, pastor of the Lutheran church, will be in charge of the services.
Mr. Herbold was a Blue Lodge Mason and a member of the Lutheran church.

Rites Held For William Herbold
Services for 88-Year-Old Retired Farmer Conducted at Local Church
Funeral services for William Herbold, 88-year-old retired bachelor farmer, were held from the Newton Evangelical Lutheran church Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Fredrick D. Boldt in charge.
Both Masonic and Lutheran rites were observed at the graveside, with Arthur Watt, H. H. Jensen, George Kelly, Harry Selbher, Walter Beals and E. L. Pink as pallbearers.
At the church Mrs. S. E. McClean and M. J. Miles sang “Rock of Ages,” “We Will be at the Gate,” and “Blest Be the Tie That Binds,” with accompaniment by Mrs. Sayre Miles. Mrs. Arthur Watt and Mrs. Harry Selbhers were in charge of the flowers.
Remembers Grange
Mr. Herbold was interested in community affairs in Jasper county and has made provisions whereby the Sandhill Grange will be given use of a building for 20 years to enable its purchase, relatives have reported.
He was born in Rodan, Germany, May 3, 1849. His mother died when he was a child. He came to the United States with his father, Christian Herbold, stepmother, a brother and sister in 1856 and settled in Scott county. In 1858 he moved to Jasper county to engage in farming and spent the remainder of his life in the vicinity of the farm where he first made his home.
Relatives
For the last 6 ˝ years Mr. Herbold made his home with Mr. and Mrs. George Lane of Newton. He and Mr. Lane were close friends and spent much time motoring.
Surviving relatives include three brothers and two sisters. They are Chris Herbold of Colfax, A. C. and L. P. Herbold and Mrs. Sophia Carrier, all of Newton, and Mrs. Minnie Armstrong of San Gabriel, Cal.
Mr. Herbold was a member of the Blue Lodge of the Masons and of the Lutheran church.
