Stroke Fatal To C. A. Heavlin, 65
City Employee Dies Unexpectedly Friday Evening At His Work
C. A. Heavlin, 65, city pump log station employee for 25 years, died unexpectedly Friday evening at his work. Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy, according to County Coroner E. A. McMurray.
Mr. Heavlin had been playing cards with a group of firemen at the city hall across the street, but had returned to his station and was talking to Frank Baker and Ervin Walker when the attack occurred. He died immediately.
Mr. Heavlin was born Dec. 26, 1871, in Missouri and came to Newton when about 12 years of age. The remainder of his life had been spent here, with the exception of a year in Wisconsin.
Before going to work for the city 25 years ago, Mr. Heavlin worked at a round house for a railway company.
Mr. Heavlin’s first wife was Minda Summerlot. Two of the children from this union are deceased and another was adopted by another family when only two weeks old.
Following her death, Mr. Heavlin was married to Cora Richards, and to this union six children were born. A daughter, Grace, died in infancy, of the living are Mrs. Arthur Davie, Mrs. Perry Kane, Mrs. Fred Townsend, Mrs. Violet Kane and Wanda Heavlin, all of Newton.
Mrs. Heavlin died seven years ago and Mr. Heavlin was married to Mary DeMoss of Monroe two years ago this October. A daughter Emma May, 9 months old, survives this union.
Besides his wife and children, he is survived by a brother, John Heavlin of Des Moines; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hanke of Des Moines and Mrs. Ella Meyers of Newton, and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Morgan funeral home Monday at 2:00 p.m.

Hold Heavlin Funeral Rites
City Pumping Station Closed for Service of Long-Time Employee
Funeral services for C. A. Heavlin, 65, city employee, were conducted from the Morgan funeral home Monday at 2:00 p.m., by John W. Bickett, pastor of the United Presbyterian church.
Music was furnished by Mrs. F. E. McClean, who sang, “In the Garden” and “Life’s Railroad to Heaven.” She was accompanied by Mrs. Edgar Sabin.
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers: Ora D. Morelock, Thomas Dennis, Virgil Bair, Matt Brown, Frank Baker, and John O’Leary.
Mrs. Virgil Bair and Mrs. Matt Brown were in charge of arranging the flowers.
Out of respect to Mr. Heavlin, who was a city pumping station employee for 29 years, the station was closed Monday from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m.
Mr. Heavlin died unexpectedly of a stroke of apoplexy Friday evening while at his work.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary DeMoss Heavlin; a nine-month-old daughter, Emma May, and five children by a former marriage, Mrs. Arthur Davie, Mrs. Perry Kane, Mrs. Fred Townsend, Mrs. Violet Kane and Wanda Heavlin, all of Newton.
