Funeral services will be conducted from the E. Carl White funeral home in Des Moines Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins left Newton over 10 years ago and had lived at Stratford and Springfield, Mo., most of the time since.
Mr. Hawkins was born in Troy, Doniphan county, Kan., April 30, 1869, the son of H. C. and Susan (Wormley) Hawkins. After the father’s death, the mother married J. Evans Ryan, an Episcopal minister of Troy, Kan.
Here in 1880
With his mother and step-father he came to Jasper county in 1880, where he grew to manhood. The step-father died in 1893, and the mother continued to live in Newton.
Mr. Hawkins was graduated from the law school of the State University of Iowa in 1892, and went to Pueblo, Colo., where he opened a law office in partnership with William Mitchell.
After a year in Pueblo, Mr. Hawkins returned to Iowa, practicing for a year in Monroe with Sloan Coder, and then coming to Newton.
Practiced Law
Attorney Hawkins practiced law in Newton for a number of years, until he became interested in the manufacture and sale of the “Clipless Paper Fastener.”
He was united in marriage to Eva Ketman of Humboldt, Ia., on Oct. 18, 1904. One child, born to this union, died in infancy.
Besides his parents and child, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by a step-brother, Fred Ryan, who died as a young man.
His wife is the only immediate surviving relative.
