Newton Resident Dies at 76 Years
Mrs. Anna Gibford, Long-Time Resident, Dies Thursday Night
Mrs. Anna Gibford, 76, resident of Newton for over 70 years, died Thursday at 9:50 p.m. at 310 West Second Street North. She had been in frail health since an operation last January.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Morgan funeral home Sunday at 1:30 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Members of the Woman’s Relief Corps will attend the rites in a body, meeting at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m.
Born in 1860
Anna Jane Rothrock, daughter of John and Hannah Rothrock, was born in Jacksonville, Lehigh country, Penn., Oct. 26, 1860, and was the last surviving member of a family of three children.
She came with her parents to Newton when she was five years old and lived here the remainder of her life.
Marriage
She was united in marriage to Charles A. Gibford in 1880, and to this union five children were born, four of whom preceded her in death. They were Mrs. Irma Miller, and Merton, Vernon and Helen Rothrock.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Will Rothrock, a sister, Mrs. Helen Kennedy, and her husband. The latter’s death occurred July 30, 1931.
Church Member
Mrs. Gibford was a member of the Methodist church, the Woman’s Relief Corps and The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club. She had been made an honorary life member of the Relief Corps in recognition of 50 years of membership.
Surviving relatives include one daughter, Mrs. M. A. Greene of Cedar Rapids, and four grandchildren.

Conduct Services for Mrs. Gibford
Dr. Leslie B. Logan of Methodist Church in Charge Of Rites
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Gibford, 76, long-time resident of Newton, were conducted from the Morgan funeral home Sunday at 1:30 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Fred Reeve, who sang, “Rock of Ages” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: S. S. Marshall, Frank Baldwin, Ray Gifford, George Fleming, Carl C. Carey and Charles O. Edge.
In Charge of Flowers
Mrs. Catherine Drew and Mrs. Daisy Wheeler, close friends of Mrs. Gibford and members of the Newton Woman’s Relief Corps, were in charge of the flowers.
Members of the Relief Corps attended the rites in a body out of respect for Mrs. Gibford, who was an honorary 50-year member of the organization.
Mrs. Gibford died Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Mary Summerville, 310 West Second Street North, where she had been cared for through the efforts of Mrs. Drew assisted by other local residents. Mrs. Gibford had been taken to the county home in March but was brought back to Newton by Mrs. Drew one week later.
Came Here as Child
Mrs. Gibford came to Newton with her parents from Pennsylvania when she was five years old and had spent the remainder of her life here.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four children, a brother and a sister.
Surviving relatives include one daughter, Mrs. M. A. Green of Cedar Rapids, and four grandchildren.
