Mrs. E. Day, 77, of Kellogg Dies
Pneumonia Fatal to Native Jasper County Resident Early Today
KELLOGG, IA. – Mrs. Elwood Day, 77-year-old Jasper county pioneer, died at her home near here this morning, following an attack of influenza that developed into pneumonia.
Mrs. Day was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hodson and was born on the “Old Phillips” farm five miles southeast of Newton.
Immediate relatives surviving are her husband, a son, Clarence H. Day of Kellogg and a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Day-Conover of Sully.
Funeral services will probably be held Saturday at Center Friends church with the Rev. Guilford Street and the Rev. Richard Newby of Des Moines in charge.

Rites for County Pioneer Planned
KELLOGG – Funeral services for Mrs. Elwood Day, 77-year-old county pioneer, will be conducted from the Center Friends church northwest of Kellogg Saturday at 1 p.m., by the pastor, the Rev. Guilford Street, and the Rev. Richard Newby of Des Moines.
Mrs. Day died Wednesday morning at her home, as the result of pneumonia. She had been a chronic sufferer from neuritis and was taken ill with pneumonia Monday.
Mrs. Day’s death occurred in the farm home south of Kellogg where she had resided for 66 years. She and her husband observed their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary there last Sept. 29.
Native of County
A native of Jasper county, Mary Hodson Day was born Aug. 21, 1859, on a farm 5 ˝ miles southeast of Newton, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hodson, pioneer settlers.
She lived for a short time in Hardin and Warren counties, but since the age of 11 years had lived on the present farm south of Kellogg.
Mrs. Day received her education in the rural schools and among her teachers was Miss Pheobe Minthorn, an aunt of former President Herbert Hoover.
Marriage
She was united in marriage to Elwood Day Sept. 29, 1880, at the Methodist parsonage in Newton.
Mrs. Day affiliated with the Friends denomination in 1893, and was a member of Center Friends church.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Elwood Day, 78; a son, Clarence H. Day of south of Kellogg, and a daughter, Mrs. Walton T. Conover of Sully, and nine grandchildren. A daughter, Inez, died at 27 years of age.

Conduct Rites For Mrs. Day
Services for 77-Year-Old Kellogg Woman Held at Center Friends Church
KELLOGG – Funeral services for Mrs. Elwood Day, 77, were conducted from Center Friends church northwest of Kellogg Saturday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Richard Newby of Des Moines and Rev. Guilford Street, local pastor.
Music included three vocal solos, “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” “Going Down the Valley,” and “Lead Kindly Light,” by Rev. Lawrence Sams of New Sharon. He was accompanied by Ralph I. Moore.
Interment was in the Center Friends cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: Frank Hill, Jay Hammer, Earl Doane, Sherman Woods, Glen Bunker and Vern Sharp, Mrs. J. D. Baldwin, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Baldwin and Mrs. Frank Hill were in charge of the flowers.

Those attending from away were Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Conover, Louise, Charles and Bruce, Rev. and Mrs. Edd Thompson, C. O. Macy, Dickie Bruxvoort, Lambert Moes and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gove, all of Sully; Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Briggs of Omaha, Neb.;
Also, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Williams and Miriam, Mildred Hadley and Mildred Hinshaw of Oskaloosa; Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Williams and Rev. Thomas Brown of Grinnell; Rev. and Mrs. Lawrence Sams of New Sharon and Mr. and Mrs. John Berlau, Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Drake and Mrs. Lester Lee of Newton.
Mrs. Day, life-long resident of Jasper county, died Wednesday morning at her home, following a brief illness of pneumonia. Her death occurred in the house where she had lived for 66 years.

KELLOGG – Mary Elizabeth Hodson, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hodson, was born in Jasper county, Aug. 21, 1859, and died at her home south of Kellogg, Jan. 27, at the age of 77 years, five months and five days.
She was married to Elwood W. Day Sept. 29, 1880 in her home where she lived since she was 11 years of age and where all of the 56 years of her married life were spent.
She received her education in the rural schools of the county and one of her teachers was Miss Pheobe Minthorn, an aunt of former President Herbert Hoover.
Elwood and Mary Day were the parents of three children. Inez, the oldest daughter, died 28 years ago. The other two children, Clarence H., of Kellogg and Ethel Day Conover of Sully, survive. They also have nine grandchildren, Helen Day Briggs of Omaha, Ruth, Gladys, Mary Jean, Harold and Richard Day of Kellogg and Louise, Charles and Bruce Conover of Sully.
Mrs. Day died Wednesday morning, Jan. 27, at her home as the result of pneumonia. She had been suffering from neuritis but was taken ill very suddenly with pneumonia on Monday.
She was a member of the Center Friends church and lived a devoted Christian life. She had always been interested in church work and had taken an active part in all departments of the church.
