Robert E. Damman, 81, of Newton died Tuesday, Aug. 24, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey, associate pastor of Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name or to Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of August Damman Sr. and Sadie Holmes Damman, he was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Jasper County. He attended school in the Newton area. In January of 1949, he married Edith Morey. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry Third Division under General Patton during World War II. He received the Purple Heart on the Anzio.

Mr. Damman farmed, operated irrigation wells in Arizona, was a factory worker for the Maytag Company and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982. He married Velvia (Cottrell) Hughs on June 17, 1970, in Lincoln, Neb. He attended Community Heights Alliance Church and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada.

Survivors include a son, Robert Damman Jr. of Roosevelt Lake, Ariz.; a step-son, Ron Skillings of Juneau, Alaska; two daughters, Shirley Engelbrecht of Knoxville and Sandy Elliott of Arizona; three grandsons; two step-grandsons; one step-granddaughter; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; two brothers, Harry and August Damman Jr.; two half-sisters, Nora Glistner and Emma Growth; and three half-brothers, Fred, Bill and Lou Damman ~ Newton (Iowa) Daily News, Wednesday, August 25, 2004
