SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- Mary Evelyn Coffee, 92, of San Pedro, Calif., formerly of Jasper County, died Friday, Dec. 5, at Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital in San Pedro, Calif.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to the Assistance League of San Pedro-South Bay, 1441 W. Eighth St., San Pedro, Calif. 90732.

The daughter of David Homer and Jane McCreight Nicholl Craven, she was born July 14, 1911, in Kellogg. She was a graduate of Grinnell High School in Grinnell and attended Grinnell College. She married Fred S. Coffee in March 1940 in Corydon. She was a homemaker and was a member of Oak Grove Friends Church of Grinnell, the Newton YMCA, First Presbyterian Church in San Pedro, Calif., and The Weavers Group-Assistance League of Palos Verdes, Calif.

She and her husband and daughter were travel enthusiasts and took frequent weekend trips throughout Southern California and spent summers traveling throughout the southwest and plains states.

Mrs. Coffee lived in Grinnell, Kellogg and Newton areas and moved to California in 1956.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Coffee of San Pedro, Calif.; three sisters, Dorothy Veber Quinn of Newton, Joyce A. Craven of Marshalltown and Janyce A. Craven of Marshalltown; and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and three sisters. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, Wednesday, July 7, 2004
