Pioneer Rural Teacher Dies
Mrs. Ida R. Carruthers, 82, Dies Today; to Hold Rites Saturday
Mrs. Ida R. Carruthers, 82, early resident of Jasper county and former rural school teacher, died today at 4:30 a.m. at the county home, where she had been a resident for the last nine years.
Mrs. Carruthers suffered a stroke Sunday night and a second one, Tuesday night.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Morgan funeral home Saturday at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. E. A. Ramige, pastor of the First Congregational church. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Mrs. Ida Cross Carruthers was born in Ohio April 21, 1865, the daughter of George W. and Mary E. (Jacques) Cross.
She came to Jasper county, Iowa with her parents when she was 12 years of age and located with the family on a farm east of Newton. When the father died, 46 years ago, the family moved to Newton.
A number of years ago, she was united in marriage to Albert Carruthers, who lived only nine months after their marriage.
Mrs. Carruthers taught in the rural schools of Jasper county for 20 years. During her many years residence in Newton, she lived at 513 South Third Avenue East.
She was a member of the Congregational church of Newton.
Her mother preceded her in death 35 years ago and a sister, Mrs. J. F. Albee of Newton and two brothers, E. M. Cross of Des Moines and Will Cross of Sapulpa, Okla., all died within two months of each other 12 years ago.
A brother, Arthur D. Cross of Glendale, Calif., survives.

Conduct Rites Saturday For Mrs. Carruthers
Funeral rites for Mrs. Ida R. Carruthers, 82, former rural teacher, were conducted from the Morgan funeral home Saturday at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. E. A. Ramige, pastor of the First Congregational church.
Richard Toedt furnished the music, singing “Face to Face” and “Abide With Me.” He was accompanied by Vera Trevits Scheel.
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: E. E. Bean, Fred Longfellow, Arthur J. Smith, V. G. Shankland, Charles Boatright, and Leslie Bean.
Mrs. Carruthers, long-time resident of Jasper county, died Friday at the county home as the result of two strokes.
A brother, Arthur D. Cross of Glendale, Calif., survives.
