Hans Carstens Dies At 69 Years
Retired Farmer Dies Sunday at Home of Sister, Mrs. Mary Raridon
Hans Carstens, 69, retired farmer and native of Germany, died Sunday at the home of a sister, Mrs. Mary Raridon, 1120 North Fourth Avenue West, following a long period of failing health.
Mr. Carstens had been in poor health since suffering a stroke in 1912. He was forced to retire from active farming at that time and had made his home for several years with his three sons and other relatives.
Mrs. Carstens became seriously ill with heart trouble and complication three days ago and was taken to his sister’s home, where his death occurred.
He was born in Schleswig, Germany, May 2, 1868, and came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Carstens sr., at the age of 10 months.
The family came directly to Jasper county and Hans jr. grew to manhood in Newton and vicinity. Before his illness in 1912, Mr. Carstens farmed northwest of Newton for a number of years and with the exception of two years each near Mason City and Humeston, spent the remainder of his life in Jasper county.
Surviving relatives include three sons, Earl Carstens of Oskaloosa, Harry Carstens of Newton, and Theodore Carstens of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters, Mrs. Dora Kracht, Mrs. Sophia Iske, Mrs. Mary Raridon and Mrs. Emma Farmer of Newton, and three brothers, Henry Carstens of Baxter, Ernest Carstens of Owatonna, Minn., and Link Carstens of Newton.
No funeral arrangements have been made, pending word from the (remainder of obituary was not found)

Rites For Hans Carstens Will Be held Thursday
Funeral services for Hans Carstens, 69, will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. from the Murdoch funeral home by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Interment will be in Newton Union cemetery.
Mr. Carstens died Sunday in Newton at the home of a sister, Mrs. Mary Raridon.

Hold Carstens Funeral Rites
Services for Retired Farmer Held at Local Funeral Home Thursday
Funeral services for Hans Carstens, 69, retired farmer, were conducted from the Murdoch funeral home Thursday afternoon by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church.
A. Eugene Burton sang, “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Going Home,” accompanied by Mrs. Burton, violinist, and Lois Hundling, pianist.
Pall Bearers
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers: Walter Fox, Robert Johns, George Raridon, Harry Grote, Elmer Kracht, and Ralph Carstens.
Immediate relatives attending from a distance were two sons, Theodore Carstens of Phoenix, Ariz., and Earl Carstens of Oskaloosa, and a brother, Ernest Carstens of Owatonna, Minn.
Died Sunday
Mr. Carstens died Sunday, Nov. 14, at the home of a sister, Mrs. Mary Raridon, after many years of poor health.
He was born May 2, 1868, in Schleswig, Germany, and came to Newton, Ia., with his parents, Hans and Dora Paul Carstens, when he was 10 months old.
On April 17, 1895, he was united in marriage to Ella Meyers and to this union three sons were born. They are Earl of Oskaloosa, Harry of Newton and Theodore of Phoenix, Ariz.
Suffered Stroke
Mr. Carstens had always made his home in or near Newton, with the exception of two years at Humeston, a year at Carroll, and a short time at Mason City. It was at the latter place that he suffered a stroke Feb. 6, 1912, from which he never fully recovered. Since that time, he had been making his home with a son and other relatives.
Besides his three sons, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Dora Kracht, Mrs. Sophia Iske, Mrs. Mary Raridon, and Mrs. Emma Farmer, all of Newton; three brothers, Henry of Baxter, Ernest of Owatonna, Minn., and Link of Newton, and five grandchildren.
