Wilburn "Brownie" E. Brown, 86, of Newton died Friday, July 9, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Glen W. Oswalt of Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Jasper County Senior Citizens and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Everett C. and Luna J. (Phillips) Brown, he was born Nov. 9, 1917, in Brumley, Mo. On Dec. 10, 1938, he married Marie I. Keeler, in Marshalltown. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a truck driver for Western Transportation Company for 25 years and was an award-winning driver with one million miles accident free. He was a member of VFW Post 1655 and Moose Lodge No. 923.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald W. and Julie K. Brown of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Tex Horstman and Shirley and Jerry Crady, all of Newton; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harley Brown of Brumley, Mo.; two sisters, Hazel Rush of Versailles, Mo., and Cleo Jeffries of Osage Beach, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lee, and a sister, Edna Byrd. ~ Newton Daily News, Monday, July 12, 2004
