Clara E. Brain, 96, of Newton died Thursday, Aug. 26, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Stephen Gibson, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Graham Cemetery in rural Mingo.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home where the family will be available from noon to 1 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Charles Vern and Laura Lovida (Blockerby) Maxwell, she was born Sept. 4, 1907, in Elkhart. On Feb. 2, 1927, she married Vernon Graham in Des Moines. She later married Willard Brain on April 4, 1976, in Newton. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Naomi Jean Engle and Lucille Cortesio, both of Newton, and LaVonne Riley of Palm Desert, Calif.; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Longcor of Coopersville, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two sons, Alvin and Arthur Graham; a brother, Lester Maxwell; and two sisters, Dorothy Reed and Goldie Maxwell. ~ Newton Daily News, Friday, August 27, 2004
