WASHINGTON -- James Matthew Brown, 66, of Washington, formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Newton Union Cemetery with the Rev. Don Freeman officiating. Burial will be at Beatty Funeral Home in Washington.

The son of C. V. "Vernon" and Sarah G. Brown, he was born July 6, 1938, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1956 and Drake University in 1960, the same year his mother received her master's degree from there. He received a master's degree in art from the University of Iowa in 1962.

The family lived in Allerton, Audubon and Tipton from 1940 to 1946 and moved back to Newton in 1946. After working in the commercial art department at Iowa State University, Mr. Brown moved to California in 1965, living first in San Francisco and then for many years in Los Angeles. He worked in several banks and for an executive suites firm for many years in West Los Angeles. During this period, he returned briefly to Iowa in 1973 to 1974, where he was an advertising salesman for the Williamsburg Journal-Tribune, and then returned to Los Angeles. He moved to Washington in 1997 and worked as the overnight clerk at the Kum & Go store until he retired earlier this year.

Survivors include three cousins, Reid K. Beveridge, Edwin Brown and Robert Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, Thursday, August 5, 2004
