Mrs. Bishop, 84, Dies Early Today
Pioneer Resident Dies at Home of Daughter, Mrs. David Welle
Mrs. H. J. Bishop, 84, pioneer resident of Buena Vista township, died today at 4:00 a.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. David Welle, southeast of Newton. Death followed an illness of uremia.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. from the Mount Zion Methodist church and interment will be in the Mount Zion cemetery. Rev. A. W. McBlain of Westchester, Ia., a former pastor, will be in charge, assisted by the present pastor, Rev. R. V. Pike.
Mary Margaret Bishop was born at Huntsville, Madison county, Indiana, May 17, 1853, and was the last survivor of seven children born to Pennington and Hannah (Middleton) Davis.
The family came to Jasper county in 1856, and located in Buena Vista township, where she grew to womanhood and spent the remainder of her life.
She was united in marriage to H. J. Bishop Sept. 11, 1870, and five children survive this union. Mr. Bishop’s death occurred March 26, 1923, at the age of 74 years.
Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Mount Zion church and missionary society, of the grange, and of The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club.
Surviving relatives include four sons, Clarence A. of Scott, Sask., Canada and Charlie E., Walter R., and Fred E., all of Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Welle of Newton, and several grandchildren.
The son, Clarence and his wife, arrived from Canada last Friday to be at Mrs. Bishop’s bedside.

Conduct Services For Mrs. Bishop
Funeral Rites Held at Mount Zion Methodist Church Friday
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Margaret Bishop, 84, pioneer Jasper county resident, were conducted from the Mount Zion Methodist church Friday at 2:00 p.m.
Rev. A. W. McBlain of Westchester, Ia., a former pastor, was in charge of the rites, assisted by R. V. Pike, present pastor.
A quartet, composed of Mrs. Isaac Welle, Mrs. Fred Welle, E. W. Van Dalen, and James Van Dalen, sang, “Nearer My God to Thee,” “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “We Are Going Down the Valley.” Mrs. Ray Livingston was the accompanist.
Interment was in the Mount Zion cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers: Clarence, Charles, Fred and Walter Bishop, David Welle and J. J. Welle.
The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Frank Gifford, Mrs. E. W. Van Dalen and Mrs. Grover McMahon.
Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bishop of Scott, Sask., Canada, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Welle of Spencer, Richard Davis of Milford, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Chenoweth and daughter, Ruth, of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Pemberton and Mrs. Florence Cope of Mingo.
Mrs. Bishop died Wednesday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. David Welle, southeast of Newton, following an illness of uremia.
A native resident of Indiana, she came to Jasper county, Ia., in 1856 and had lived since in Buena Vista township.
Her husband, H. J. Bishop, preceded her in death March 26, 1923.
Surviving relatives include four sons, Clarence A. of Scott, Sask., Canada, and Charles E., Walter R., and Fred E., all of Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Welle of Newton, and several grandchildren.

KILLDUFF – Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Hilon J. Bishop from the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Welle and at the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal church on Friday, Nov. 19.
The services were in charge of Rev. R. Vernon Pike and Rev. A. W. McBlain of Westchester, Iowa.
Rev. McBlain preached the funeral sermon taking as his text Job 30:23 “For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.”
Music for the rites was furnished by a mixed quartette composed of Mrs. Isaac Welle, Mrs. Fred Welle, E. W. Van Dalen and James Van Baren. Mrs. Roy Livingston was the accompanist. They sang “Nearer My God to Thee,” “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “We Are Going Down the Valley.”
Interment was made in the Mt. Zion cemetery with Mrs. Bishop’s four sons, Clarence, Charles, Walter and Fred Bishop, a son-in-law, David Welle, and Mr. Welle’s brother, J. J. Welle, serving as pallbearers.

She came to Iowa with her parents when she was three years of age. They settled in Buena Vista township in Jasper county where she spent the remainder of her life except for a few years when the family lived in Oskaloosa, Ia., while she was a girl.
She attended the public schools and the Hazel Dell Academy in Newton.
She was united in marriage to Hilon J. Bishop on Sept. 11, 1873. To this union were born eight children, three of whom have preceded her in death. Pearley and Emil died in infancy and Hilon jr. died March 6, 1906, when almost 16 years of age. Those surviving are Clarence A. of Scott, Sask., Canada, Charles E., Walter and Fred E. and Mrs. Mabel Welle, all of Newton, Iowa.
Mr. Bishop, the husband and father, died March 26, 1923, at the age of 74 years. Since that time
Mrs. Bishop had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Welle, who cared for her during her illnesses and declining years. Mrs. Bishop had been gradually failing in strength for several years which was climaxed with a serious and sudden attack of illness Thursday, Nov. 11, from which she never rallied. Her death occurred Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the age of 84 years and 6 months.
Mrs. Bishop was the last surviving member of a family of seven children. Besides her own children mentioned she is survived by 9 grandchildren: Karl Bishop of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Margery Bishop Young of New York City, Willard, Lela, Helen, Richard and Glen Bishop and Margaret and Ruth Welle all of Newton.
Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal church for more than 50 years, having united with the church during the pastorate of the Rev. Jesse Craig in 1884. She was also a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Society, of the Buena Vista Grange and of The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club.
She loved the church and its fellowship and took an abiding interest in everything that had to do with the well being of the community and of all its welfare organizations.
Rev. McBlain had conducted the funeral services of her son Karl when he was pastor here, and at her request returned and conducted Mr. Bishop’s funeral in 1923 and about 6 years ago made plans that when her time should come to go that she wished Rev. McBlain to conduct the services for her also.
