Grinnell Woman Dies Tuesday At Age Of 78 Years
GRINNELL, IA. – Grinnell lost one of its oldest residents Tuesday morning when Mrs. Rhoda Bayley, 78, died suddenly at her home here while in the midst of household tasks.
Widowed in 1898 when her husband, the late Jacob Bayley died, Mrs. Bayley made her residence the home of college students for many student generations and became known as “Aunt Rhody,” throughout college circles. She brought up two children, a son, Harry Bayley of Benkelman, Neb., and Miss Nettie Bayley, principal of a Grinnell elementary school.
Mrs. Bayley, a distant relative of Henry Ford, was born in 1859, and came to Grinnell shortly after her marriage in 1876. She was a native of Burr Oak, Mich.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the local Methodist church, of which she has been a long-time member, conducted by its pastor, the Rev. Charles R. Rowe.
