SULLY -- Cleo VanDer Kamp, 87, of Sully died Sunday, Sept. 5.

Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at the First Reformed Church in Sully. Burial was at Sully Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 111. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella handled arrangements.
Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Pella Comfort House.

The son of Paul and Gertie (Van Genderen) VanDer Kamp, he was born Feb. 19, 1917, in rural New Sharon. When he was two years old, his parents moved to a farm which belonged to his grandfather, one mile east of Sully. A couple of years later, they moved to a farm south of Sully and he started school at the Iron Clad School. When he was in fifth grade, the family moved back to the farm east of Sully and he finished his formal education at the Taylor Country Grade School. He worked for Sully Cooperative Elevator and later started the tank wagon for Sully Cooperative Oil. On June 3, 1941, he married Maurine Vande Krol. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. They lived in Lynnville for one year and he drove truck for Skelly Oil Company. They started farming in 1947 near Taintor, and in 1951 they moved to the VanDer Kamp farm previously owned by his grandfather. In the spring of 1988, he sold the farm and moved into Sully.

Mr. VanDer Kamp attended the Sully Community Church for many years and spent many hours with his friends at the Coffee Cup Cafe in Sully. He enjoyed gospel quartets and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryce and Shirley VanDer Kamp and Roger and Jean VanDer Kamp, all of Sully; two daughters and sons-in-law, Iris and Roger Plummer and Eunice and Willie Scholten, all of Sully; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Milo and Velma VanDer Kamp of Columbia, Mo., Floyd and Jeanetta VanDer Kamp of Pella, Vernon VanDer Kamp of Carpinteria, Calif.; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Walter Vander Leest, Ruby and Ralph J. Van Wyk and Neva and Harry Lanser, all of Sully.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Gerald Dieleman, and two brothers-in-law, Walter Vander Leest and Laverne Van Zante. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Thursday, September 16, 2004
