Nelle Welle, 103, of Newton died Friday, Sept. 10, at Skiff medical Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Donald Freeman officiating. For those wishing to attend, burial will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Newton Union Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from noon until 6 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the United Presbyterian Church or to Skiff Medical Center Foundation and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the morning of the service.

The daughter of Gerrit and Bertha Crum Wisgerhof, she was born Nov. 22, 1900, in Sully. She was the last surviving member of the first graduating class of Sully High School. She attended Iowa State University. On June 29, 1922, she married C.B. Welle in Sully. She has lived in Newton since 1944. She was a homemaker and a teacher in Jasper County rural schools.

Mrs. Welle was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She belonged to the United Presbyterian Women, Chapter AO-PEO, 20th Century Club, Clio Club and the Jasper County Historical Society.

She has a profound interest in birds, wildflowers, gardening and natural history. She enjoyed her home in Lambs Grove and enjoyed reading and traveling. She was very knowledgeable about the history of the Sully area.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and James Tyler of Newton; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Max Wisgerhof of Galesburg, Ill.; three sisters, Erma Bailey of Newton, Ann Tjelle of Holt, Mo., and Lorene Smith of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. C.B. Welle; eight brothers, Guy, Elza, Oliver, Lester, Howard, Carroll, Karl and Earl Wisgerhof; and a sister, Reva Wildman. ~ Newton Daily News, Monday, September 13, 2004
