PELLA -- Johanna Verhoef, 80, of Pella died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella with the Rev. Patrick Eduoard officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella handled arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to Pella Christian School or Oskaloosa Christian Grade School.

The daughter of Gerritt and Neeltje Van Oudenallen Griffioen, she was born April 30, 1924, in Kockengen, Utrecht, The Netherlands. She graduated from Edam High School in Holland and took nurse's training for three years. On Jan. 30, 1947, she married Simon Verhoef. When they moved to the United States, they settled in Oskaloosa. She later attended Vennard College and taught kindergarten at Oskaloosa, Prairie City and Pella Christian Grade schools. She retired in 1988. She and her husband retired to Pella.

Mrs. Verhoef enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She also enjoyed playing the organ and singing hymns and Dutch Psalms. She was active in Pella as a Dutch interpreter and coached the Tulip Queen and Court on the use of Dutch phrases and songs. She was an active member of the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.

Survivors include her husband; her children and their spouses, the Rev. William and Ruth Verhoef of Redlands, Calif., Gary and Corinne Verhoef of Pella, Janny and Gerald Van Dusseldorp of Denver, Colo., and Nellie Van Haaften of Knoxville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Verheul of The Netherlands; and several nieces and nephews. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, Monday, September 20, 2004
